ABSTRACT

This chapter defines a group and details how group develop. The chapter examines the relationship between group size and productivity. It examines team cohesion, its correlates and its relationship with performance. It describes leadership effectiveness and the coach-athlete relationship. It details common team-building interventions. Group dynamics is a topic with a voluminous body of literature, perhaps reflecting the value ascribed to it in daily life. Sport psychologists have drawn on many theories to identify effective leadership characteristics. These have included theories focused on the person's personality traits or the situation factors influencing effective leadership. Sport psychology can be defined as the study of an athlete's behaviour, thinking and feelings in sport. The study of group dynamics and processes helps psychologists consider the immediate social sport environment within which athletes perform and adds a level of complexity to the discipline.
