ABSTRACT

This chapter examines different ways in which people can explore their assumptions, beliefs, and conceptions of teaching and learning that make up their principles. Teachers can become more aware of the importance and influence of each. The chapter provides opportunities to reflect on their principles as part of the overall Framework for Reflecting on Practice. This chapter encourages people to reflect on their perspectives of teaching and learning through uncovering their assumptions, beliefs, and conceptions. Although all three principles are sometimes used interchangeably in the literature, the chapter considers them to be different points on the same continuum of meaning related to gaining more self-awareness. Together with the knowledge gained from reflecting on people's assumptions, beliefs, and conceptions, they are now ready to move on to the next stage in the framework, reflecting on their theory. This chapter explores two commonly held assumptions in education: 'teaching as a calling' and 'group work as valued'.
