ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how teachers can systematically reflect on practice through different lenses such as classroom observations, and through action research. It first discusses how teachers can reflect in, on, and for action, and then outlines and describes how teachers can reflect on their practice by engaging in classroom observations. The chapter covers how teachers can plan action research projects as a result of reflecting on practice. Reflecting on practice through classroom observations can be done by a teacher alone or with the aid of peers through various arrangements such as peer coaching, team teaching, and lesson study. This chapter presents two types of classroom observations: self-observation and peer-observation. Although many in second language education tend to treat action research as a stand-alone theory in education, it comes under the umbrella of reflective practice.
