ABSTRACT

This chapter presents many case studies to examine the intersecting worlds of children through the ecological model. Urie Bronfenbrenner as one of the first theorists to examine the intersecting worlds of children through his ecological model. His original version consisted of four concentric circles named the microsystem, the mesosystem, the exosystem and the macrosystem. You will see how this model works with the individual child at its centre and then the concentric circles, one within the other, to show the movement from the most intimate contexts of the home to the more remote contexts beyond. Egocentrism was a central tenet of Jean Piaget's analysis of how young children learn. He believed that they were not able to see the perspectives of others. The terms peer teaching and reciprocal teaching can be used to describe the intentional or unintentional situations where children learn and teach together.
