ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book offers a theoretical framework, which understand and evaluates the mediatised, affectively mobilising, and discursively fragmenting role of bodily vulnerability in contemporary digital media culture. It serves as a detailed analytical deployment of contemporary theoretical interest that in affect in its socially transformative or bio-political potential, and contributes to the developing field of research in the areas of media affect the contagious communication. The key mechanism in the book is establishing a relation and the response. The book touches on three main academic areas: digital culture and communication studies; vulnerability studies in the areas of politics, globalisation, environmentalism, and memory studies. This chapter offers an interdisciplinary approach that links close readings with the sociocultural levels, and that develops the relationship between vulnerability, global media, affective processes, and the mediated bio-political body.
