ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the traditional field of mediated vulnerability, charity, donation, and philanthropy, and explains how globalisation and global media networks have affected these forms of giving. It outlines the concept of seduction, ethics, and productive publics, which are of great importance for our understanding of the cases, and for the transformation of the field of charity that encompasses these cases. The chapter argues that the seduction that takes place in every charity relation is just the responses to the fundamental challenges that the unfortunate that others pose to us that vary. The chapter also introduced the concept of seduction in order to understand the relationship between the donor and the donee. It could be argued that in the new model the voice of the unfortunate of the other is heard and seen less than in former spectacles of suffering, and that is a plausible risk.
