ABSTRACT

Healthwise, Inc., is a nonprofit company in Boise, Idaho, that employs writers, editors, and physicians to create health and medical information, technology, and services for consumers in the US, Canada, and around the world. In April 2014, Healthwise merged with the Informed Medical Decisions Foundation, a Boston nonprofit organization that promotes shared decision making between patients and their care providers by developing instructional materials, supporting research, and advocating for policy changes. Healthwise believes that the reader is the best judge of whether a piece of content is readable. It has a strong corporate culture with a focus on ethics. Teamwork is an important part of plain-language culture and practices at Healthwise. Planning is an important aspect of the content-development processes at Healthwise. Healthwise content cannot eliminate BUROC situations, but it helps patients make better decisions in response to them.
