ABSTRACT

This chapter shows how the Evidence Rules address BUROC situations, how participants completed the restyling project, and how organizational culture and ethics affected the Evidence Rules project. It explains that plain-language professionals may take away from the effort to restyle the Evidence Rules. Professor Joseph Kimble led work on the Civil Procedure Rules, approved in 2007, before starting on the Evidence Rules in late 2007. The ethical principles applied in the restyling project include respecting values of fairness and justice, respecting the rights of all individuals affected by the Evidence Rules, and demonstrating ethical professional behavior to collaborators. The Committee on Rules of Practice and Procedure within the Judicial Conference does important work to serve the US federal court system. Laws and court decisions can significantly affect individuals' freedoms and their opportunities to exercise the rights of citizenship.
