ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book begins by giving an understanding of the basic components of the English Language Arts Common Core Standards for History/Social Studies and Science and Technical Subjects, Grades 6-12. It will include lessons, strategies and activities linked to Standards that can be easily implemented or adapted to meet the needs of 21st-century learners. The book focuses on how to successfully balance the demands between teaching academic content and literacy, grading and planning. The possibilities for collaboration with the Common Core are endless Remember; change is easier with a friend. The Common Core Standards are not only content based; they enable teachers to implement a school-wide structure of inquiry-based, higher-level thinking and learning. Content area knowledge should be a guide that helps students realize their personal interests and hopefully develop hobbies from them.
