ABSTRACT

Every accent contains shifts for some, but not necessarily all, of these elements of vocal variety. Follow the "musical notes" up and down to get a feel for the melody of the accent. The filled-in notes are shorter than the open notes. For those who are musically inclined, think of them as approximating quarter notes and half notes. This distinction will give you a feel for the rhythm of the accent. Luganda is a lively, tonal language. Vowels have a high tone, a low tone, or a falling high-to-low tone. The pitch change is mostly major. The resonance starts robustly, filling the chest. Then, it travels through a slightly narrowed pharynx, which creates pharyngeal twang. Think of it then going through a widened soft palate to the bones at the base of the skull. It then spreads fully into the sinuses, without becoming nasalized, and gets lidded in the "metal disc" area of the skull.
