ABSTRACT

This chapter considers how to work with the vowels and diphthongs in the sound shifts tables. In the vowel and diphthong tables, there is a lexical sub-set for that shifts to the lexical set when speaking British Received Pronunciation. This sub-set is included in the ask/bath list later on in this chapter. This shift usually occurs for African speakers influenced by British English. In the vowel and diphthong tables, there are lexical sub-sets for and that shift to the phoneme when speaking RP. This shift usually occurs for African speakers influenced by British English. In the vowel table, is considered a back vowel by the IPA, but people use the diacritic to indicate a shift in articulation toward the middle of the tongue for DAE. In some accents, the sound shifts are inconsistent because of spelling. For this reason, vowels, diphthongs and diphthongs of R sometimes include different representative spellings.
