ABSTRACT

As a product of the rise of modern states (Gellner, 1981), nationalism can be defined as the consciousness and sentiment regarding one's relation to the nation. This chapter intends to explore three major issues related to nationalism in the Chinese context. First, we seek to gauge the intensity of nationalistic sentiments in four different mainland Chinese cities. Among the many types of nationalistic sentiments, this chapter pays special attention to one's affective evaluation of the shared Chinese cultural legacy (i.e., cultural nationalism) and one's psychological commitment to having a thriving and strong nation (i.e., developmental nationalism). The former hinges upon one's ties to the past, whereas the latter speaks to the country's future.
