ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at a particular type of investment within the schools that both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students attend, tied to the concept of reconciliation. In the short term, increasing the confidence and ability of teachers and educators to incorporate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures, perspectives and contemporary issues into curriculum planning and teaching will make for a much richer educational experience for all students. This is an important point when reflecting on the programmes and their role in the human capital development of Indigenous peoples. A more recent focus of Reconciliation Australia has been on the way in which schools and early learning services across Australia can contribute to the reconciliation process. More powerful than a single cross-section, it is also possible to link responses to the surveys through time, at least at the school or early learning service level.
