ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 describes Syriza (Coalition of the Radical Left), initially a minority political formation, born from the merger of the various Greek expressions of the non-Socialist left. After a first transitional phase, following the events tied to the outbreak of the Great Recession, the effects of the “humanitarian crisis” in Greece, and given the progressive delegitimation of the historic parties of bipartisanship, Pasok and New Democracy, Syriza proposes itself as a party of government, winning the elections of 2015. The difficulties of managing the economic crisis and the Memorandum drafted by the main institutions of international financial governance put Syriza in dire straits, and in 2019 it loses control of the government.
