ABSTRACT

Chapter 8, dedicated to the populist transition undergone by several parties with a long historical tradition. These examples demonstrate a high capacity for transformation in response to changes in the external political environment. The objective here is to understand the causes and conditions that allow for such adaptations in order to show how even a party carrying heavy ideological baggage from the Marxist tradition can become a populist party. The cases taken into consideration are the Socialist Party in the Netherlands, the Parti du Travail de Belgique (Workers’ Party of Belgium) and Sinn Féin (We Ourselves) in Ireland.
