ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on how to effectively implement self-assessment in the classroom, viewing it as an essential self-regulated learning skill that simultaneously benefits the learning of curriculum content. We suggest that teachers adopt cycles of self-regulation around the implementation of classroom self-assessment with their students, beginning with careful planning, followed by monitoring during implementation, and concluding with reflection after activities have been completed. The chapter also recommends how self-assessment implementation might be guided at a school or department level, discouraging a top-down approach. Instead, we suggest models that actively involve teachers in integrating their own practices, individually and in groups, appear most successful in prompting genuine change.
