ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a lesson study a hypothetical real-life scenario is introduced to develop mathematical modelling. The teacher spoke about having a lot of fun talking about mathematics with the class and developing deep mathematical understanding. The learners are used to questioning their own understanding and constructing new ideas by working in groups. Modelling allows learners to make use of the mathematics they learn in order to solve real-life problems giving the learning of school mathematics a purpose and helping to dispel the widespread view that mathematics is abstract and divorced from reality. Pre-service teachers are at an advantage when trying less traditional and more risky approaches to teaching since they are, in a sense, expected to make mistakes and are less accountable to the school community. The open nature of mathematical modelling, even if difficult to handle, is an essential component of the experience.
