ABSTRACT

Education in East Jerusalem is one of the focal points of the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. This chapter examines the education system in East Jerusalem, specifically the public school system, for which the Israeli Ministry of Education has been responsible for since 1967. The Israeli oppressing presence in East Jerusalem affects every aspect of everyday life in the city, including education; however, we must remember that education is a basic human social right. The intricate reality of living in East Jerusalem under the Occupation and in a constant struggle for survival has deep-rooted effects on the attitude of the residents toward their education system. In some respects, the Palestinian residents are similar to their fellow Palestinian-Israelis, in their cultural background and national expectations from the education system. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
