ABSTRACT

Students who are preparing for high-stakes exams often go about the process in an individual and isolated way. By doing so, they cut themselves off from important resources and support that will help them to pass. This chapter helps correct this perspective by illustrating how thoughtful preparation takes place within a network of different people, ideas, and resources. Both visually and narratively, the chapter maps out and compares the licensure exam advice networks of four students. These networks illustrate from where and whom students get ideas, advice, and information about the exam. These four cases illustrate the different ways that preparation networks can support or hinder success, and what students can do to shape their own advice networks.
