ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we discuss popular approaches for implementing technology use in the mathematics classroom including gamification, screencasting, and flipped classroom strategies. All of these approaches have the potential to augment and amplify mathematics teaching practices so that student engagement is enhanced. As many schools are moving towards bring your own device (BYOD) programs, enabling students with 1:1 access at school, we examine how these programs are being designed and implemented. Despite these clear moves towards greater technological access in schools, many teachers are still reluctant to fully embrace their potential affordances. We look at the potential reasons for this reticence through an examination of the potential barriers and challenges involved in technology integration in mathematics classrooms. We draw on data from a survey of more than 400 teachers of mathematics investigating their attitudes towards technology use and their perceptions of school support for innovative technology-related practices.
