ABSTRACT

Activists at the National Union of Students (NUS) have provided the leadership in the Higher Education sector in the UK to ensure that tackling sexual violence at universities has been put on the agenda and remains there, Some university communities have made major and significant changes, whilst others seem to have done virtually nothing with students still often reluctant to report sexual violence to their university. Historically much of the problem of sexual violence has been shrouded in secrecy, as has the everyday sexism that can be very much in the public domain and socially normalised. The sector owes a debt of gratitude to the National Union of Students for contributing this report in addition to activist campaigning with successive NUS women’s officers in particular. Staff-on-student and staff-on-staff sexual violence or misconduct is currently coming more to the fore in view of growing concerns and the learning from work done with student-on-student policies and practices.
