ABSTRACT

This chapter presents policy, reporting, investigations, staff training, support for victim/survivors and reported parties, and communications. It aims to provide the prevention and reduction of sexual violence and shows that all those reporting sexual violence have appropriate educational, emotional and practical support in place. The chapter argues that investigations are handled appropriately and expeditiously for the reporting party and the reported party along with the wider university community. Institutional reporting procedures sometimes include reporting procedures for sexual violence under ‘disciplinary procedures’. All investigators should be trained specifically in how to investigate allegations of sexual violence within a university setting so that university communities can be confident that such individuals have the appropriate knowledge and skills to undertake an effective investigation. Student Nightline teams at universities are generally well trained as effective listeners with skills-based assessments to become ‘nightliners’. University communities actively tackling sexual violence may be justifiably proud of such work.
