ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the complicated nature of service in the context of tenure. Many pre-tenure faculty struggle with service as an aspect of faculty work that can take up a great deal of time, yet receives little consideration in the tenure decision. The chapter begins by outlining the types of service and how it is evaluated. Disparities in service by gender and race are considered to provide important context to the challenges related to service. This chapter also helps assistant professors decide when they should say yes to service activities and how to say no gracefully. To conclude, the chapter provides a series of Do’s and Don’ts related to service.
