ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the research on motivation and cognitive science that explains why the routines promote engagement and durable learning. It examines more about Autonomy, Belonging, Competence, and Meaning, notice how teacher's thinking about motivation is confirmed, changed and maybe challenged. Fact, Question, Answer is a great example of how All Learners Learning Every Day classroom routines are rooted in research and implemented in a practical manner designed for student variability. When Rhonda Bondie was a classroom teacher, like most teachers, she was inspired to reach every child in her class. Research on motivation suggests autonomy is a powerful motivator. A core assumption of the research on motivation is that individuals are motivated toward competence. Students are more likely to engage in tasks when they feel confident about their abilities to achieve and when people feel a sense of self-efficacy. Motivational theories largely assume that students are more likely to approach and engage in academic tasks when they have personal meaning for them.
