ABSTRACT

Self-employment may be an option in some cases. There are several advantages: it eliminates the 'hidden curriculum' of the workplace and it permits a more controlled structuring of the environment. Nevertheless, there is stress attached: there are records to keep, marketing to be conducted and clients to keep satisfied. By working freelance, employers can organise they own structure and environment. Nevertheless 'self-employment can be stressful if it is not handled correctly. There are records to keep, marketing to be done and clients to keep happy. Make sure employers are up for these tasks before deciding to go down this route.' Self-employment may be highly productive, especially when a keen interest is socially valued. Many autistic people who are unable to succeed in job interviews, or can not cope with workplace politics, are able to at least scrape a living through their own enterprise.
