ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the microprocessor era, c. 1982–1992, and the rise of “smart” terminals, “microcomputers” and off-the-shelf hardware/software, along with the increasing use of computers in smaller news organizations (including newspapers and radio/TV stations). The use of “personal computers” in newsrooms (particularly smaller newsrooms) and operating systems such as MS-DOS, despite initial suspicion and cost, are reviewed.
