ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we discuss how the physical, cultural, and social space of Artisan’s Asylum, a 40,000 square foot makerspace with multiple shops and 400 active members, mediate the ways in which people communicate with and learn from one another as they work on individual and collaborative projects. Specifically, we describe the interrupting culture of the Artisan’s Asylum, or the ways in which people “interrupt” each other in while they are working to ask questions or seek guidance, and the emergent social and professional networks that result.
