ABSTRACT

Women and LGBTI groups in Brazil are often targets of assault and sexual violence while in transit. This chapter reports the results of this survey conducted in 2018, focusing on victimization and safety concerns among 462 university students in a middle-sized town in São Paulo State, Brazil. Results show that LGBTI, especially young women, tend to be overrepresented among those victimized by sexual harassment and sexual crime (LGBTI with 31.7 percent of victims, 120 percent more than non-LGBTI and women with 26.5 percent of victims, 250 percent more than men). These groups declare having more safety concerns, which in turn, limits their mobility. This chapter also reveals the types of places they feel most unsafe and discusses a set of measures that can be implemented to improve mobility safety among university students.
