ABSTRACT

Despite the fact that the England and Wales National Curriculum takes great pains to stress the cross-curricular nature of Information Technology (IT), it is important to think of IT as a subject in its own right, too. This chapter considers the sorts of IT-related skills teachers might be looking to develop, and the sorts of activities they might use to try to develop them. These ideas are focused particularly on the needs of the class teacher. Language skills are applicable across subject areas. Some Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) skills are applicable across subject areas, too, but those skills may also need to be identified in terms of the IT curriculum. The chapter presents some reasons why people might want to consider ICT and IT separately. It provides suggestions triggering teachers own thoughts on how and when to teach using IT.
