ABSTRACT

In this chapter, based on my research on learners from the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and informed by two decades’ experience of teaching them, I highlight some possible ways curriculum, pedagogy and community can converge to better equip teachers and PRC learners as the latter transition from an English as a Foreign Language to an English as a Second Language/English as an International Language context. The different sections will seek to discuss the following topics: what to expect and how to support learners, what to aim for and how to guide goal-setting, and what/how to teach and how/where to get help. The final section demonstrates some of these issues and actions via a sample lesson outline.
