ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book examines how universities are changing and the current pressures on those who work in the university sector, especially increasing managerialism in higher education along with new digital technologies. It shows the significance of where people write, when people write, and how they arrange their lives to protect particular kinds of writing. The book explores the diversity of writing all academics engage in, both within and beyond their disciplinary research writing, showing the multitude of genres which are part of academic professional life and the diversity and hybridity of these genres. It focuses on how social media have transformed the writing environment. The book discusses the role that relationships play in academics’ writing lives through their research, teaching, administration, and service roles and considers the range of people involved.
