ABSTRACT

News literacy requires a holistic understanding of the contemporary news landscape. The much-discussed rise of fake news is important, but this kind of misinformation is only a symptom of larger problems. Journalism is one of the most important democratic institutions in society, but a host of economic and technological forces and challenges have limited news media’s ability to perform its essential role. Furthermore, citizens have a limited understanding of news practices and conventions that influence the content that gets produced. This chapter offers a more nuanced way to think about commonly discussed issues such as objectivity and bias by moving toward considerations of structural influences and news frames.
