ABSTRACT

Recreation, leisure and tourism can contribute to environmental impacts at the local or site level and at the global level.

Local environmental impacts At the local level these can be classified as:

Impacts on natural resources • • • Development can put pressure on natural resources particularly in areas where resources are already scarce. In this respect fresh water, is one of the most important natural resources and the recreation and tourism industries have high water usages for golf courses, hotels, swimming pools and personal consumption by tourists. This usage (particularly with its natural industry peaks) has the capacity to create water shortages and waste water disposal problems.
