ABSTRACT

Chapter 27 discusses the maintenance and first aid treatments that are sometimes carried out on tapestries while they remain on display. However, it is more common to have to remove a tapestry from display in order to carry out full conservation treatments. At this point the size and weight of a tapestry become important considerations; at the same time, a tapestry in need of full conservation can be extremely weak and easily damaged. These factors mean that the act of removing a tapestry from a wall is a major operation which must be carefully planned and executed.
