The knowledge-based view of the firm provides a unique backdrop for strategic human resource development (SHRD) because it places the knowledge and skills that are embedded in the routines of the organization at the heart of sustainable competitive advantage (Nelson and Winter, 1982; Grant, 1991). Central to understanding how knowledge is created and embedded in an organization is the theoretical concept of the learning organization and the process of organizational learning.
