These are questions familiar to many of those who deal with stored museum collections.1 Currently, there are few convincing answers. In response to pressure to be relevant now, many museums have shifted their focus from their collections to their audiences. This leaves no clear purpose for collections, which are almost always vastly greater than any prospect of exhibiting them.2 The strong consensus that museums are for people has given rise to a feeling that they are therefore not about objects at all.
