Collections for research

Collections in museum stores are for research or they are surely for nothing. Many museum professionals feel that collections are little, or insufficiently used for research1, but is this the case? What can be learnt by comparing collections that are primarily for research with those for which this purpose is less clear cut? Who are the researchers and what sort of benefits do they seek? What can museums do to facilitate and promote research on their collections?
