ABSTRACT

Demographic changes are creating a demand for new communities in developed countries. For example, in the UK there is a projected need for nearly 4 million new homes, mostly in the Southeast of England. One suggestion by the planner Peter Hall is that there could be three new cities around London which he calls City of Kent, City of Anglia and City of Mercia. These will focus on existing towns and cities: Ashford, Cambridge, Peterborough, Wellingborough and Rugby. They would comprise clusters of new communities which would create the ideal opportunity to realise the goal of integrated environmental design at the district level.
