Principles of refurbishment

This chapter outlines the options and processes of modernizing residential and commercial buildings and enhancing their overall performance. It focuses predominantly on the non-structural improvements that can be made to housing and non-residential buildings. The principal aim of such work is to bring properties up to modern standard in terms of thermal efficiency, weather-tightness, durability and appearance.

The principles relating to the refurbishment of buildings generally is the principal focus of this chapter. For example, some of the issues covered here, such as condensation control and indoor air quality, apply to non-residential as well as residential refurbishment work. Chapter 9 deals with more specific aspects of refurbishment that apply to most types of buildings.
