ABSTRACT

Fancy the concept of a philosophical hotel? Try the Manhattan, Pretoria. Arriving there recently, was greeted by a poster in the main lift with the hotel's very own “thought for the day” embezzled across — “The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires”. Fine words of wisdom. Except, looking at it (and assuming the same maxim applies to lecturing in general, and, in this case, to lecturing tourism in higher education in particular) personally I was sorely tempted to scrawl at the bottom. “And the sensible lecturer abandons teaching and concentrates on research”.
