ABSTRACT

One question regarding digital imaging crops up over and over again. It concerns the number of megapixels in a camera, and many underwater digital photographers are continuously monitoring the recent releases of digital SLRs and the smaller consumer compacts. Not so long ago, a six-megapixel (MP) camera was the ultimate. That figure soon rose to eight megapixels, and the latest Nikon D2x and its Canon counterpart, the EOS-1DS Mark 11, now boast twelve and sixteen megapixels respectively.

Image quality is not just about the amount of megapixels; it also depends on other factors, such as the quality of the camera’s sensor, its dynamic range and its ability to reduce digital noise.
