ABSTRACT

With film cameras, you have to change film in order to correct for colour casts during the moment of taking the photograph. Digital cameras have built-in white balance settings, making life so much easier. The colour of light underwater has different characteristics from the light on land. The deeper you go, the more light is diffused – so at 30 m deep, just blue light remains. For natural colouration it’s usual to select a custom white balance setting before shooting. Options differ from camera to camera, but the usual ones are: auto, direct sunlight, fluorescent, incandescent, flash, cloudy, shade and preset (also known as custom white balance).
