ABSTRACT

Colour filters are not a new development in underwater still photography, and have been used since at least the 1960s. However, in those early days it seems that filters were only used because flash photography was at best temperamental, and at worst dangerous! Filters have never been the popular choice, and even the most experienced users would rarely be pleased with the muted and inaccurate colours. Digital cameras have changed all of this. These days, filters are more popular than ever before and many new photographers now buy a filter even before an external strobe. Available light photography with filters works with digital simply because the cameras can automatically fine-tune the colour balance of our images to produce accurate and vibrant results.
