International tourism to Australia peaked in 2000 — the year of the highly successful Summer Olympic Games in Sydney — when Australia attracted 4.9 million visitor arrivals (VF, or total arrivals including same-day visitors). In the shadow of 11 September and the collapse of the country’s second-biggest airline Ansett, the arrivals trend since then (i.e. to end-2003) has been negative (Table 5.1).
