South Africa

While tourism expansion in many of the world’s leading destinations has been disrupted by global terrorism and the economic downturn over the past three years, South Africa’s tourism performance has impressively bucked the trend. In 2002, it recorded 11% growth in international tourist arrivals, bringing its total count to 6.6 million. And preliminary figures for 2003 suggest that the growth trend has continued, albeit at a slower pace (Table 11.1).
