Unit 4 Applied Engineering Systems

Systems are all around us. Indeed, we use the term ‘system’ so liberally and in such a wide range of contexts that it is difficult to explain what the term means in just a few words. However, at the risk of over-simplification, we can say that every system has:

• a function or purpose • a number of inputs and outputs • a boundary which defines what is inside the system and what

lies outside it • a number of smaller components or elements linked together

in a particular way.
