The theory and practice of facility management came into prominence in the mid-1980s as a function that recognised the importance of efficiently planning and managing the use of built infrastructure facilities throughout their life cycle from inception to disposal. New concepts were introduced focussing on operational standards such as space planning, integrated building services, energy efficiency and planned maintenance. Importance has also been attached to the impact of changes in technology and the need to adapt facilities to meet changing user requirements.
