ABSTRACT

The challenges of dual leadership that exist within nonprofit sport organizations are the focus of this chapter. The increasing professionalization of the sports industry has led to a reduction in volunteer control of many nonprofit sport organizations and has challenged decision-making processes within these organizations. This chapter discusses the effects of professionalization on leadership within nonprofit sport organizations and the nature of the relationship between boards and staff, in particular the chief executive officer (CEO). The distribution of power within boards and who has influence over decision-making within boards is also explored. Finally, the duality of leadership within nonprofit sport organizations is discussed through an examination of prescribed governance guidelines and the findings of an increasing body of research.
