ABSTRACT

Sport organizations are subject to a variety of external and internal pressures that often lead to change in their governance structures and systems. This chapter explores the drivers of governance change and the effects of change on boards and individuals in governance roles. This chapter is presented in three sections. The first section reviews the drivers of change for sport governance structures and systems. This is followed by a discussion of how changes in structures and systems are manifested within sport organizations. The final section discusses the approaches of sport organizations to managing the impacts of governance change. There is an emphasis on instituting governance reforms introduced by national sport agencies such as the processes involved with the amalgamation of formerly separate nonprofit sport entities.
