ABSTRACT

Sometimes when things get hectic — a common occurrence in TV news — the boss might forget to share his or her vision with you. If this happens, it is important that you tell your boss what you are planning to do. See if he or she agrees or has another take. Some producers may resist this because they feel that their vision is so right-on, that once the story is shot, the boss will love it. I think this can be a mistake. If you bring back a story that is the opposite of what the executive producer intended, it will not be a good thing. There is nothing worse than being called on the carpet with questions about why you didn’t ask certain questions or get certain shots. Because of time and money constraints, you will likely not be able to go back and redo it.
